Our July/August book pick is: Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
(book content warning: death, food)

Published in 1988, Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, love, tragedy, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart.

We will be discussing the second half of the book and wrapping up the novel! If you'd like to participate and borrow the book or join in and listen to what the book is about, feel free to attend or email programming@outontheshelf.com for more information! You can also make suggestions on what book you'll like to read next as a group.

Participants should expect casual conversations about literature and see friendly faces, understanding, respect, with no pressure in a laid-back environment.

Facilitators: Gilles, Melanie, and Griffin
