Our Collection

We have over 2500 titles that you won’t find anywhere else in the city –Books, DVDs, and more. From the ribald to the risque, we’ve got everything your inner bookworm could possibly desire. We also have a selection of valuable documentaries on notable figures in queer history, a wide range of archive material showcasing society’s changing thoughts on queer culture, a collection of children’s books, and many other great resources.

Our new space began the circulation of materials in August 2017, prior to that we were located at 10 Carden Street. In the past year(s) we have expanded hours of operation and have hundreds more resources available. We also look forward to launching our interlibrary loan operations with other organizations in Guelph. Watch this space for our new schedule and new partnerships!

Currently Out On The Shelf membership is available for $10 per year which includes library membership and voting privileges at our Annual General Meeting. To sign up for a membership you must be at least 13 years of age. All you need to do is bring in either a valid driver’s license or a piece of mail with your name and address on it (e.g. a bill from a phone company, etc.)

Pamphlets & Resources

We have dozens of current and informative pamphlets and take-away literature on everything from safe sex to queer parenting and mental health.

Our Hours

OOTS volunteers are at the library 

Mondays 9:00am - 6:45pm

Tuesdays 11:30am - 1:00pm

Wednesdays 9:00am - 5:00pm

Thursdays 2:30pm - 5:00pm

Fridays 9:00am -12:30pm and 3:30 - 5:00pm

Outside of these hours, patrons may still take out books using the self check-out system. 

Library Cards

To obtain a library card you will need to come into the library in person. Library cards are $10, however we do work on a sliding scale basis, so if someone can only pay $5 or even $0 that is perfectly fine. Patrons can pay in person or online through PayPal. The main info we will need is a name, and absolutely need an email and city of your current location. There are regular memberships and memberships for folks ages 18yrs and under (only difference youth cannot vote at our AGM).

As the OOTS Library transforms into an interlibrary loan organization, our goals are to:

  1. be a safe place for people to learn, explore, and discover,
  2. become a resource of information and inspiration for the entire city and beyond,
  3. be a responsible and valuable partner to other community-building organizations in Guelph,
  4. actively spread understanding and compassion on issues of sexuality and identity, and
  5. enthusiastically originate and promote events that celebrate and expand our diversity!

Out On The Shelf continues to play a very active role in Guelph’s Queer Community with over 130 active members and over 30 volunteers. We continue to grow as an organization and as a resource centre and strive to create a safe, inclusive, and diverse space for all members of the community.
