HIV TestingThere are two kinds of HIV tests available in Ontario: the rapid HIV test and the standard test. Both tests are equally accurate. If you test positive, you will need another test to confirm your result. The Rapid HIV Test uses a small amount of blood taken by pricking your finger. Within minutes, the test will show whether you are HIV-negative, or if you are HIV-positive. The nurse that gives you the test will be the only other person to know your HIV status. In the Standard HIV Test, a blood sample is taken from your arm. It will be sent to a laboratory and it takes about two weeks to get your result. HIV test results are always given in-person, so you will need a follow up appointment if you get a standard HIV test. STI TestingMost STI testing is done using a urine sample, but depending on the kinds of sex you are having, your partners, and your body, you may also need a rectal swab, throat swab and/or a Pap smear (anal or cervical). Be as honest as you can when talking to your health care provider so you can get the tests that are right for you. |
